4 ideas that will light up your kitchen island

Kitchen islands are a top trend among homebuyers. Islands provide a natural place for guests to gather, while facilitating a natural flow in kitchen areas. With islands being a “must-have” for today’s homeowners, this brings up the issue – how do you properly light this area? We were pleased to hear our friends at Modernize had some home design wisdom to share. We hope you will enjoy their guest post on kitchen island lighting ideas. Which is your favorite?

We like to think of the lights over a kitchen island as if they’re the fabulous jewelry that make an outfit come alive. An otherwise lovely kitchen can be taken to the next level of style with the right lighting. It’s important to remember that lighting must be as functional as it is gorgeous to get the most out of your kitchen space. We’ve gathered four of our favorite ideas to serve as inspiration for your kitchen island lighting search:

1. We love lantern style lighting, such as Progress Lighting’s Crestwood lantern, because of the amount of light it provides while also maintaining the open feel of a room — plus, it’s unique.

2. Pendants provide direct lighting to the kitchen island. With this option, you may need other types of lighting (such as under cabinet lights) to ensure there is enough light throughout the kitchen area. This is a wonderful option if you plan to use your island for tasks such as preparing meals or doing homework.

3. A classic lighting fixture, such as an ornate chandelier, will bring you back to an older time period. This style offers a gorgeous way to light your kitchen island if you’re going for a more traditional look.

4. Recessed fixtures light up your entire kitchen, not just the island, which is great for achieving even lighting throughout the space. Use recessed for ambient lighting, and pair with decorative fixtures to show off your personality.
