DIY Weekend Project: A how-to bathroom lighting refresh

Time is running out to beautify your home for the holidays and your out of town guests. Luckily, a bathroom lighting refresh is a simple DIY project that can be completed in a snap with little to no hassle. Change out a vanity light fixture in less than 10 minutes for a fresh, new look in a guest, master or half bath. As with any room of the home, lighting greatly affects the design, atmosphere and functionality of your bathroom setting. Progress Lighting offers a variety of bath and vanity fixtures that cater to your unique interior style while providing you the proper illumination to complete everyday grooming tasks.

Lahara Bath & Vanity Lighting

  • Today, we’ll show you how to install an overhead three-light vanity. This is a short and easy project that you can do yourself.
  • It’s important to consider the size of light that is right for your space. Your bath bar should never exceed the width of the vanity cabinet. Progress Lighting offers one to four light vanity options in a variety of sizes, styles and finishes.

  • STEP 1: First, turn off the power at the breaker box. Once you confirm there is no electricity flowing through the wires, remove the old light fixture and mounting hardware.
  • STEP 2: Screw your new mounting bracket into the junction box using the screws provided, and pull the wires through the opening. Now, you’re ready to wire the fixture.
  • STEP 3: Match the white wire from the fixture with the white wire from the wall and twist together with a wire connector. Do the same with the black wire, matching color-to-color.
  • STEP 4: Twist the copper ground wire from the wall around the green screw. Then, connect with the matching copper wire from the light fixture using a wire connector. Secure all wires with a layer of electrical tape. Push the wires into the opening in the junction box.
  • STEP 5: Next, mount the fixture on the bracket and tighten the decorative nuts. Put in your glass globes, and screw in the light bulbs.
  • STEP 6: Finally, turn the power on at the breaker box, and flip your light switch on – and enjoy!
  • The key to lighting your bathroom is to provide shadow-free lighting at the mirror, so we recommend a layered lighting approach. Consider adding a companion close-to-ceiling fixture, wall sconces, recessed downlights or even a chandelier for a beautiful and practical lighting design.
