Lighting That Really Makes An Entrance

Ideas and inspiration for new foyer and entryway lighting that really makes an entrance to refresh your foyer and make a great first impression for family and friends.

How to Make a Great First Impression
Want to make a great first impression? Start with your entranceway. Once an afterthought, today's home designs bring entrances, foyers, and stairwells to the forefront. It makes sense: these areas are often the first thing you see when entering a home.

Designer Amie Freling Brown of Meme Hill Studio recently redesigned her front entrance hall, bringing it from dull and dark to bright and light. She exchanged outdated paneled walls and a parquet-style hardwood floor for light-colored flooring and walls. An ornate circular stairwell gave way to a staircase with simple, square white balusters topped by contrasting dark banister rails and newel posts. An elongated foyer light fixture adds drama and emphasizes the clean look of the stairwell.

Use Black as a Cohesive Element
Black is used to punctuate the decor throughout this space, as well as the rest of her home. "I'm in love with touches of black right now," said Amie. "It's a neutral color that you can use as a thread to tie elements together in a home. And finding black is easy: hinges, hardware, window frames, decorative accessories and especially lighting are trending in black finishes."

She chose Leyden, a new foyer fixture from our 2021 lighting collection, as a statement-making light for the entranceway. "This light has it all: an elegant, airy black frame, a streamlined linear look, plus, it gives way more light than the previous fixture."

Whether in a hallway or entrance, Amie recommends a simple and minimalistic look. "Keep the design thoughtful for tight spaces," she says. "A small chest of drawers does double duty for storage and can be used as a drop zone. Look for multi-functional pieces."

Airy Fixtures Offer Lots of Light
Amie replaced two outdated, frosted shade fixtures with the new Briarwood flush mount ceiling light to update her hallway lighting. A Ceruse Black finish on the faux-wood frame gives the classic X-brace design of the lights a modern look. The exposed bulbs shed plenty of light on the space. Bright artwork lining the walls and a beautiful rug offer an elegant edge to an otherwise utilitarian space.

Whether in a hallway, entrance, or other space in your home, Amie recommends thinking about how lighting can re-invent the look. "With the pandemic, so many people are spending more time at home. They are looking around and seeing what can be changed or fixed," said Amie.

"Changing the lighting in your home is a simple, cost-effective upgrade that makes a huge difference."
