Hanging a chandelier instead of a typical flush mount fixture or ceiling fan adds instant luxe to a bedroom. Interior designer and blogger Amie Freling-Brown, of Meme Hill Studio, selected the lighting first for a recent Modern Farmhouse bedroom design, and the rest of the room's details flowed from that.

"Designing this modern farmhouse bedroom actually began with the Brandywine Antique Bronze 5-light pendant," said Amie. "Master bedroom tray ceilings allow for those larger fixtures and added drama." The bedroom has a monochromatic color scheme of gray and crisp white, accentuated with pops of minty green. Amie's choice of the Brandywine pendant, with its round globe shape and interlocking Antique Bronze sphere accented by gilded, hand-painted details, offers a mixed-metal look that compliments the romantic decor.

"The finish color is carried throughout the entire house, including plumbing and hardware. The two finishes combined was LOVE at first sight," said Amie.

Taking its cue from the colors and textures of the seashore, the apartment sleeping area in the 2020 This Old House Idea House is designed to draw the eye upwards with high ceilings that gave designer Denise Enright the opportunity to create visual interest. The Hangar 3-light pendant beautifully punctuates the vertical space, with its Graphite frame making a statement against the crisp white palette of the room. Deep-sea blue tones add calming color against the white, and the mix of textures in the quilted bedding, fuzzy throw pillows and crocheted stools add another layer of intriguing detail. Even the stack of books on the bedside table complements the room's color scheme.

The guest room in the This Old House Idea House has an unexpected mix of soft paint colors—on walls, casings, and ceiling—to brighten the guest bedroom. Pale bedding and high curtains help create an open, airy feel. The Kempsey semi-flush light centers the room's design with statement-making style on the soft green ceiling. The fixture's crisp textured Summer Linen shade and exposed Brushed Nickel arms add to the airy Coastal feeling. "I achieve a Coastal Chic decor style by using textures, not just colors," said Denise. "Linen, rattan, and other unexpected materials add to a room's beachy vibe."

Denver, CO design firm, Possibilities for Design, always looks up to the ceiling when planning a room's design. In this master bedroom, Doris Pearlman, founder of the firm, noted, "When we entered this home, it originally struck us that there was very little architectural detailing. In the bedroom, our number one job was to create that interest, so we added it with concentric trim detail on the ceiling, and in the middle of that, we centered the Fontayne chandelier."

The Fontayne six-light chandelier has candelabra lights encased inside a sphere, creating a mix of impressive graphic elements and a classic elegance. A dual-tone finish of Antique Bronze and faux wood accents works beautifully with the room's soft taupe walls and off-white bedding and draperies, creating a neutral, textural, and harmonious color scheme. "I'd really love to stay here. It's the perfect retreat and way to relax in your master," Doris said.
