00:13Rao. The market leader in electrical boxes offers a
00:15full line of ceiling fan support boxes designed and rated to meet the heavier load requirements
00:20of a ceiling fan or heavier light fixture such as a chandelier for this Hubble.
00:25How to I'll be sharing some tips on how to choose the correct electrical box for your fan
00:30or light fixture installation so you can avoid catastrophes like this.
00:34The first criteria we'll consider is whether the installation is for an old work or a new
00:39work environment. Electrical boxes for old work are specifically
00:43designed to install when open access to the ceiling, choice is not available.
00:47This is common for renovation projects like adding or changing out a light fixture or
00:51ceiling fan if installed properly. You can typically avoid refinishing steps like
00:56patching walls or repainting.
00:58On the other hand, new work boxes are designed for installation in a new construction setting
01:03when framing is exposed, new work boxes often have time saving features that provide a more
01:09efficient installation in a new construction or major renovation setting.
01:13Some boxes are designed to install in either environment, look for the old work or new work.
01:19Call out icons on the packaging and our videos to help guide you in the selection process.
01:24The location of the fixture within your room is the next factor we'll consider this can dictate
01:29whether you choose a box that installs on the joist or between the joists.
01:33Remember to turn the power off at the breaker before performing any electrical work.
01:38If you're upgrading an existing box, oftentimes it makes the most sense to select a box that
01:43attaches to the same part of the joists as to where you're replacing here,
01:47we're removing a plastic box that was nailed to the side of the joist for this install.
01:51I've selected the 294 since it installs to the side of the joist for this application will be
01:56rated for a 70 pound light or fan.
01:59The 294 includes a reversible bracket and a set bag tab that also makes it a great option for
02:04new construction. There are two other types of boxes that
02:07installed directly to the joist and both are suitable for new or old work settings.
02:12The first is the pan box named for its shallow pan, like depth,
02:15it screws to the bottom of the joist and is a simple, easy solution for many situations,
02:20just like the pan. The saddle box installs directly to the bottom
02:24of the joist, but it has the benefit of extra capacity on the sides.
02:28Choose this box if you need more room for the wiring connections or just prefer the
02:32convenience of the extra working space. Sometimes the joist may not align exactly where
02:37you desire for the fan or light to hang in those situations.
02:41A ceiling BRAC and box kit is a good option.
02:44These are adjustable so the location of the box can be fine tuned between the joists.
02:49These are available in new work like this 926 and old work varieties.
02:55Here, we're showing a 936 installed entirely through the four inch box opening.
03:00The final selection criteria is the rating all Rao ceiling fan and light support boxes are
03:06rated for heavier loads.
03:08But if you're installing a particularly heavy fan or light,
03:10then make sure you select the product that meets the proper rating.
03:13This will be indicated on the packaging and the box itself also keep in mind that the weight
03:19rating often varies between light fixtures and ceiling fans because the extra torque from a
03:23spinning fan, here's a chart that summarizes the selection process.
03:28This has been simplified.
03:30So refer to the packaging or data sheets for more specific details or instruction on each of
