00:18A dye is a component added to a tool that conforms to a specific type of crim joining a
00:24connector to a conductor to produce a safe and reliable connection.
00:29Bernie designs and manufactures many different types of dyes used in the electrical power
00:34industry. Despite their different appearances,
00:37each one is designed and tested to work with a designated tool connector and conductor for its
00:42intended application.
00:44Circumferential dyes, circum frontal dyes produce circular indents on opposite sides of
00:50the compression barrel, circumferential dyes are commonly used on solid stranded flex and A
00:56CS R conductors and are popular in construction and industrial applications and in overhead
01:02distribution hex dyes, hex dyes produce a hexagonal cross section that uniformly compress
01:09the conductor strands.
01:11Hex dyes are commonly used on stranded and A CS R A CS S conductor and are
01:18popular in transmission applications. Nest and indent crimps are made with a dye set
01:24consisting of the nest dye which cradles the tubular barrel being crimped and the indent dye
01:30which compresses and cold works. The conductor and connector into a sound crim
01:37nest and, and denture installations require fewer crimps to install than hex or
01:41circumferential.
01:43They eliminate the need for dye selection and results in less elongation of the connector.
01:48During installation budding, the faces of the
01:54die would contact each other on a completed crimp non budding,
02:00the crimp would be completed before the dye makes contact.
02:06The colors represent the burnie engineered system.
02:09Colored bands should match the color of the connector to ensure a safe and reliable
02:14connection.
02:22The dye index numbers correspond to a specific wire size.
02:26Every connector has a corresponding number of a dye that should be used to make a safe
02:31connection. The
02:37emboss shows inspectors that the crimp was made with the right dye and specifically a burnie
02:43dye with the burnie bug catalog number,
02:51brandy bug wire size, metric size color
02:57code index number.
