HeliCAP® Software

Quick Reference Guide

Design Examples – There are five ready-to-use example files to familiarize you with this software including examples of tension, compression, tieback, soil screw, and end bearing and friction applications. Download to your hard drive simply by clicking on each one.

Purpose – Helical Capacity Design Software (HeliCAP®) v2.0 is a state-of-the-art helical pile and helical anchor capacity program designed to operate in the Microsoft Windows® environment. The program calculates the compression and tension capacity of CHANCE® helical piles and anchors using the design theories and methods adopted by Hubbell Power Systems, Inc. (HPS). This software has built-in features which allow the design professional to quickly select the helical pile or anchor components needed to meet specific project requirements. This software utilizes a user-friendly interface and graphics to present both input and output data in easy to understand profiles, tables, and graphs. This software assists in selecting the most economical and safe solution of civil construction projects for which CHANCE products can be applied – either as a tension or compression load-carrying element. This software can be used in the analysis of applications such as remedial underpinning of existing structures, deep foundations for new construction, uplift resistance for guyed structures, tiebacks and soil screw anchors for earth retention structures, high capacity piles for commercial structures, and tiedowns for seismic/wind loads. However, there are many uses for these products, which have not been listed here.

File/Open – Creates a new job file or opens an existing file on a hard drive using Microsoft Explorer. To create a new job file, type the file name and press Enter. To open an existing job file, double-click or select it from the list and click Open. HeliCAP® job files are in .mdb format. The program adds the prefix “Chance” to the beginning of each filename entered. A .wav file containing audio comments – which can be recorded in the “Info” menu, will accompany each file. When a new file is chosen, the program will default to tension application mode, and a single CHANCE Type SS5 10’ (or 10 meter) Helical Pile vertically oriented with a single 8″ diameter helix plate will be inserted on the worksheet page.

Info – Provides basic information, such as location, contact information, dates, input units, voice comments, etc., for a particular project. It is recommended to fill this screen out first for future reference. NOTE: Select input units (metric or US) before soil data has been entered. If units are changed after data entry, output will be incorrect.

Application – Compression, tension, tieback and soil screw anchors: Sets worksheet page for the intended application. For compression and tension applications, HeliCAP® v2.0 places helical anchors/piles at the top of the soil profile. For tieback and soil screw applications, anchors are placed at the left side of the soil profile. It is recommended to select the application mode before entering data.

Profile – Double click on the left side depth markers to create soil layers from the Edit Soil Layer Screen or enter data in the Soil Profile table by clicking on the PROFILE button on the toolbar. Enter depth, soil type, blow count, cohesion, friction angle, unit weight, bearing capacity factors, and bond value data. Enter water table depth on the worksheet.

Series – Selects product series, helix thickness and grade, and helix configuration for selected pile/anchor. Series also inputs analysis type (bearing only, friction only, or both). The user may select from pile/anchor configurations that are available from HPS as a standard catalog item. For bearing only, select product series, the number of helices, and helix configuration. If a particular configuration or helix thickness and grade are “grayed out” it is not available as a standard item for the selected product series. Select User Configuration to custom design pile/anchor configurations within specified constraints that dictate allowable helix diameters and combinations. For friction, only and both bearing and friction, select capacity method, no load zone depth, and grout column or steel pipe shaft diameter for a selected pile/anchor. Available shaft type (concrete or steel) is based on product series selected.

Angle/Datum Depth/Length/Critical Depth – Click and drag the top and tip pile/anchor “drag” boxes to change the angle, datum depth, and length, or enter values directly from the keyboard. Enter critical depth values directly from keyboard.

Calculate – Calculates capacity using the current soil data and configuration settings from the worksheet for all displayed anchors/piles. The results are displayed in tabular form by clicking on TABLE in the toolbar. In addition, the program will calculate and graphically display the capacity vs. depth, and torque vs. depth for the currently highlighted anchor/pile for the tension, compression and tieback application modes. The graph feature can be turned off in VIEW\GRAPH.
