CHANCE® Proximity Voltage Indicator

This video discusses the basic operations of the CHANCE Proximity Voltage Indicator (PVI) to aide in compliance with OSHA 1910.269. The PVI is the non-contact version of the CHANCE ARVI, and is a critical tool to aide in the safety of working conditions of utility workers across the globe when contact with conductors is restricted. As demonstrated in the video, the unit is built to safely attach to the universal fitting at the end of a hotstick of appropriate length relative to the expected voltage class. It is then placed near the conductor (power line) to determine its voltage class, and if it is energized or de-energized, prior to maintenance. This voltage tester is a field intensity meter that is calibrated to read approximate line-to-line voltage when in close proximity of any phase conductor. The voltage class is indicated by a brightly lit LED and audible beep. The PVI can be used in overhead as well as underground residential distribution (URD) systems. When properly used with an appropriately maintained hotstick, this unit allows a lineman to adhere to the Minimum Approach Distance (MAD) for safe work practices.
